Michael James Owen (born December 14, 1979) is a former England footballer who plays as a striker for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Stoke City, as well as for the England national team. Since retiring from football, he has become a successful stallion, breeder, and horse racing owner.

The son of former soccer player Terry Owen, Owen was born in Chester and started his senior career at Liverpool in 1996. He progressed through a young Liverpool team and scored in his debut in May 1997. In his first full season in the Premier League, he finished as a goalscorer most with 18 goals. He repeated this the following year and became Liverpool's top scorer from 1997-2004, earning his name as a proven goalscorer despite recurring hamstring injuries. In 2001, Liverpool won the UEFA Cup treble, the FA Cup, and the League Cup, and Owen was the recipient of the Ballon d'Or. He went on to score 118 goals in 216 appearances in the Premier League for Liverpool, and 158 goals in total of 297 appearances. Regarded as one of Liverpool's greatest players, Owen was ranked 14th in "100 Players Who Shook The Kop", an official Liverpool fan poll. In 2004, Owen was named by PelÃÆ'Â © in the FIFA 100 list of the world's greatest living players.

Owen moved to Real Madrid for £ 8 million in mid-2004; he is often used as a substitute. He scored 13 goals in La Liga before returning to England the following season where he joined Newcastle United for £ 16.8m. After a promising start to the 2005-06 season, most of the injuries kept him out for the next 18 months. Upon his return, he captained the team and became the team's top scorer for the 2007-08 season. Newcastle were relegated in the 2008-09 season and Owen moved to Manchester United as a free agent. He spent three years at Old Trafford before joining Stoke City in September 2012. Owen is one of eight players who have scored 150 or more goals in the Premier League. He is also the youngest player to have reached 100 goals in the Premier League. On March 19, 2013, Owen announced his retirement from playing at the end of the 2012-13 season.

Internationally, Owen first played for England's senior team in 1998, becoming Britain's youngest player and the youngest scorer at the time. His appearance at the 1998 FIFA World Cup brought him to national and international advantage and he went on to score goals at UEFA Euro 2000, World Cup 2002 and Euro 2004. He is the only player who has scored in four major tournaments for England. He played in the 2006 World Cup, but suffered an injury that took him a year to recover. Sometimes playing captain, he is Britain's number 11 player and has scored the previous national record (since beaten Wayne Rooney) with 26 competitive goals, totaling 40 of 89 appearances, most recently in 2008.

Owen was born in Chester, Cheshire, the fourth child of Jeanette and Terry Owen. His father is a former professional football player and plays for clubs like Chester City and Everton. Owen was introduced to football at the age of seven by his father who immediately saw Michael as the most promising athlete in the family. As a childhood Everton fan, Owen studied at Drew Rector Elementary School in Hawarden, Flintshire, north Wales and at the age of ten, some of the country's top guides monitored his progress.

At the age of eight, Owen was selected as the Under-11 Deeside Area Primary School team. At the age of nine, he became captain and at the age of ten he broke Ian Rush's 20-year record for the same team by scoring 97 goals in a season, improving Rush's record with 25 goals. Owen also broke the record of Gary Speed's performance after playing in all three seasons for the 11-year-old player since he was eight years old. Owen joined Mold Alexandra's youth team, playing with a team under 10 at the age of eight after a local physical education teacher, Howard Roberts, persuaded the league to allow underage players. Owen scored on his debut for Mold Alexandra, a 2-0 win over local rivals Bagillt. He went on to score 34 goals in 24 games in his first season with Mold Alexandra. After leaving Deeside, Owen attends Hawarden High School, north Wales where he also plays for the school team.

Club career

Liverpool

At the age of 12, when Owen started studying in high school, he was eligible to sign a school contract with the club. The first big club to see him play for Deeside is Liverpool. Brian Kidd came down from Manchester United and there was also interest from Chelsea and Arsenal. But Steve Heighway, Liverpool's youth development officer, wrote to Owen personally. Terry Owen states: "[Heighway] wrote us a letter and it was love at first sight for Michael, he was impressed from day one." Owen then signed a form with Liverpool's young team. The club then persuaded Owen to attend the FA School of Excellence at Lilleshall in Shropshire at the age of 14. Owen soon played for the England side from under-15 upwards, breaking some goalscoring records with 28 goals in 20 games for England u-15 and u-16s. Owen also scored a lot of goals as he rose quickly through the Anfield youth ranks. Throughout this time, Owen has continued his studies and achieved ten GCSEs. Despite his academic success, Owen insists his future is a professional soccer career with Liverpool.

In the 1995-96 season, Owen played for Liverpool's youth team even though he was still at Lilleshall. Most of the players are 18, but Owen is only 16. He scored a hat-trick against Manchester Youth FA Cup holders in the quarter-finals, scoring a winner in extra time. Owen then scored another hat-trick in a 4-2 win in the first leg in the semi against Crystal Palace. Liverpool trailed 3-0 after just 50 minutes in the second leg, but with Owen taking charge and scoring twice, the team came out 7-5. Liverpool face West Ham United in the final, playing more than two legs as well. West Ham have not lost in 24 consecutive games, boasting future England stars Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard. Owen missed the first leg at Upton Park while he was on a tour with England under the age of 16 at the European youth championships in Austria. He returned for the second leg where Liverpool fell far behind but Owen equalized with his eleventh goal in five cup games and Liverpool won the game 2-1. This is the first time Liverpool have won the FA Youth Cup in club history and Owen is widely regarded as the star of the FA Cup campaign.

1996-2000

Owen celebrated his seventeenth birthday by signing a professional contract with Liverpool. He was given a place in Roy Evans senior squad, with Steve Heighway stating that, "[Owen] is ready for whatever you throw at him, nobody disturbs Michael Owen. He's ready. If the manager wants a recommendation from me, Michael gets me. " Owen also stated that his goal was "first team place in next year or so". Karl-Heinz Riedle, who before joining Liverpool in the summer of 1997 had never heard of Owen, stated, "Unbelievable when you see him playing to realize he's only 17 years old," he said. "He's a good player, very fast and for his age he has very good vision and awareness. He's a great player already and in a year or two he'll be a really great player." Owen was rated "the best assailant of his age in the country" in January 1997. Ted Powell, coach of the English championship winner under 18, declared Owen to be the best generation player including Paul. Scholes, David Beckham and Robbie Fowler.

On May 6, 1997, Owen scored in his Liverpool debut against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. Liverpool are league title challengers for Manchester United but their failure to beat Wimbledon in the last second match of the season league handed the championship to United. The Liverpool Echo wrote, "[Only] Michael Owen can come up with any compliments from a show that mocks the rich Anfield tradition." Owen, who came on as a second-half substitute, "[breathed] new life into the Reds' corpse," and "started Liverpool's best spell tonight," but ultimately could not save victory. The Liverpool Echo states, "This is a debut that is marked in a magnificent way."

Owen replaces injured Robbie Fowler as Liverpool's first choice striker in 1997-1998. He won the Golden Boot Premier League and was awarded the Best PFA Player of the Year award. Owen also finished in third place in the PFA Player Election of the Year behind Dennis Bergkamp and Tony Adams. Owen recorded many personal achievements during the season and helped Liverpool challenge for the league championship but ended up running a bad form in February seeing the club bend out of the title race. The Liverpool Echo wrote, "[Owen] has become the most valuable Liverpool player and, quite simply, their savior." Owen signed a five-year contract with Liverpool worth 2.5 million pounds during the season. The £ 10,000-a-week deal makes him the highest paid teenager in the history of English football. Owen is runner-up for Zinedine Zidane in the World Player of the Year award, who also finished fourth in FIFA World Player of the Year and the European International Player of the Year award.

Owen retained the Premier League Golden Boot in 1998-99 despite a hamstring injury against Leeds United which prematurely brought its season to an end on 12 April. With his speed identified as his greatest strength, Liverpool's game has been spinning feeding him through the passes and long balls. Owen continues to move from a static position to full speed in seconds. ESPN wrote, "It [will] eventually [prove] too much for the [Owen] hamstring to handle." Liverpool failed to challenge for the league title that season despite Owen's brilliant form The club has appointed a new manager at GÃÆ' Â © rard Houllier and transitioning out of the Spice Boys era, Owen ended the 1998-99 season as runner-up for Nicolas Anelka in PFA Young Player of the Year.

Owen returned to action after nearly five months of layoffs during the 1999-2000 season. He plays intermittently throughout the season and ends up handing Gold Boot to Kevin Phillips. He has completed just six full matches in January and, during a frustrating spell punctuated by recurring damage, has managed to stay 90 minutes only three times since mid-October. Owen hamstring injury once again while playing against Middlesbrough in January. He remained out of action for more than a month and then received treatment from the German doctor Hans-Wilhelm MÃÆ'¼ller-Wohlfahrt. Continuous hamstring problems ended up robbing Liverpool from Owen for a third of the season where a lack of goals ultimately made them lose their place in the Champions League.

2000-2004

Owen helped Liverpool to Treble in 2000-01. The team won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup to end the six-year trophy drought. Owen was the European Footballer of the Year award for recognition of his performance that season. He became the first English winner of the European Player of the Year award since Kevin Keegan was honored in 1979. Owen scored two Liverpool goals at the end of the 2001 FA Cup to reverse what appeared to be a certain defeat for Liverpool in the hands of Arsenal.

Liverpool and Owen are challenging for the league championship during the 2001-02 season. The team finally finished runner-up to Arsenal, with Owen playing a key part in the campaign. On 29 December 2001, Owen scored his 100th goal for Liverpool during the season against West Ham United. He also led them to success in Charity Shield and the UEFA Super Cup during the start of the season in 2001. Liverpool went on to become the first British team to win five trophies in a calendar year. Owen signed a four-year contract worth Ã, Â £ 70,000 per week with Liverpool during the season, making him one of the top recipients in the Premier League.

Real Madrid president Florentino PÃÆ' Â © rez started in early March 2002 to pursue Owen. PÃÆ' Â © rez declared his intention to make Owen the next GalÃÆ'¡ctico , stating that "the best player should play for Real Madrid". Liverpool manager GÃÆ'Ã… © rard Houllier laughed at all the visible interest, saying, "They may be able to buy Ronaldo but they can not afford Michael Owen. For that kind of money they can only buy his left leg but he will not go anywhere. is Liverpool through and through and he lives with me. "

Owen continued with a strong performance in the 2002-03 season which saw Liverpool lead the league standings and remain unbeaten for several months. However, a series of disastrous results started from November and peaked in January seeing the team bow out of the title race. Chelsea pipped Liverpool to fourth and last place Champions League on the last day of the season. Owen was also controversially ignored for the PFA Player of the Year award during the season. He continues to build personal records with Liverpool and has scored his 100th goal in the Premier League on 26 April against West Bromwich Albion. Success in the League Cup also means Liverpool have ended with the trophy for the third consecutive season. Owen scored in the League Cup Final against Manchester United to clinch the trophy for Liverpool.

Liverpool's failure to qualify for the Champions League sparked speculation about Owen's long-term future. It was initially reported that Liverpool and Owen almost agreed on a new deal in the summer of 2003. However, it was later reported that Owen refused to open talks about a new contract with the club until after UEFA Euro 2004. Transfer speculation has continued to link him with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Owen was quoted as saying, "I really have to play in the Champions League and that is something that Liverpool have to fix." Owen later denied the quote, stating, "Some words I never even say and the rest are completely out of context."

Houllier moved to reshape the Liverpool squad in 2003 to convince Owen. He stated, "We want to win the title. This is our vision at Liverpool - and we want to win it with Michael on our team." Michael is a true world-class player. He has a great season and I think he will be better next season. Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce was quoted as saying, "Stop Michael Owen's score and you're 50 percent headed for the results at Anfield," while Owen has admitted to being frustrated at his lack of playing support from his teammate.

After a shaky start to the 2003-04 season, Liverpool emerged as title contenders once again, with Owen leading the attack. Owen, however, will suffer an ankle injury while playing against Arsenal on 3 October and consequently suffered a "three-month nightmare injury". Owen only played intermittently over the following months, suffering ankle and hamstring injuries, while Liverpool's season was a mess. After a goal drought that lasted nine games and three months, Owen returned to fitness and scored the form with a goal against Manchester City on 11 February. Owen helped revive Liverpool's hunt for fourth place, scoring his 150th goal for Liverpool in the next game against Portsmouth on 15 February, and despite suffering further injuries, finally brought Liverpool to fourth and final Champions League spot.

After GÃÆ'  © rard Houllier was sacked as Liverpool manager, speculation about Owen's departure from the club began. During the first few Champions League games at the start of the 2004-05 season, Owen sat on the bench to avoid being tied in the Champions Cup, something that would mean he would not be able to play in European competition for other matches. club that season. Since 1998, Owen has been Liverpool's top scorer every season until he leaves the club. Real Madrid signed him for a fee of £ 8m on August 13, 2004, with midfielder Antonio NÃÆ'ºÃÆ'  ± ez moving in the other direction as a heavyweight.

Real Madrid

After their successful bid, Owen was presented with a number 11 shirt by Real Madrid. Owen joined the club during the era of GalÃÆ'¡cticos , and played alongside Ronaldo, RaÃÆ'ºl, LuÃÆ's Figo, Zinedine Zidane and teammate David Beckham in England.

Owen had a slow start to his Madrid career. He is often locked up on the bench and draws criticism from Spanish fans and the press for lack of form. His return to action with the England squad in October 2004 seemed to revive his spirits, however, and in the next first game, he scored his first goal for the club, winning in a Champions League 1-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv. A few days later, he scored his first goal in La Liga in a 1-0 win over Valencia. The scoring game continued, as he found the back of goal in three of the next four games to make five goals in seven consecutive games.

On April 10, 2005, Owen scored his fourth goal of Real Madrid in a 4-2 win over El Clásico over Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

Owen ended the 2004-05 season with 13 goals in La Liga, with the season's highest goal-scoring ratio scored for the number of minutes played. After Madrid signed two Brazilian forward, Robinho and JÃÆ'ºlio Baptista, in the summer of 2005, there was speculation that Owen would return to the Premier League. During his time at Real Madrid, Owen scored 16 goals from 45 matches, 26 of which started.

Newcastle United

On August 24, 2005, Newcastle United announced that they had agreed a record cost of £ 16.8 million to get Owen, although they still had to negotiate with the player's advisor. Liverpool and local rivals Everton enter the fray, but do not want to match the asking price Madrid. Since the 2006 World Cup is less than a year away, Owen wants to get more playing time to secure his position as first choice striker in the England squad and join Newcastle amid rumors that he has included a £ 12 million escape clause. On August 31, 2005, Owen signed a four-year contract to play for Newcastle, despite initial press speculation that he would rather return to Liverpool. About 20,000 fans were present at Newcastle's stables at St James' Park for the official opening of Owen as a Newcastle player. A few days after signing, he suffered a thigh injury in pre-season, which kept him from starting the 2005-06 season. He scored his first goal for the club in his second appearance, the second goal in a 3-0 away win at Blackburn Rovers on Sept. 18, Newcastle's first win of the season. Owen scored his first hat-trick for Newcastle in a 4-2 away win over West Ham United on 17 December. It was also a "perfect hat-trick", with one goal printed with each of his left legs, right leg and head.

On December 31, 2005, Owen broke his metatarsal bone at his feet in a game against Tottenham Hotspur. She underwent surgery to place pins on the bone, to help speed up the healing process. He was not expected to act until the end of March, but the healing process did not go as expected and on March 24 he underwent a second small operation. Owen then stated that he should be fit for the last few weeks of the season with Newcastle. His return to action finally came against Birmingham City on 29 April when he came off the bench in the 62nd minute. After the game, Owen stated that he was "not 100% happy" with his legs. He underwent further X-rays and made himself unavailable for Newcastle's final game of the season.

A broken anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) on his right knee, which was maintained in the first minute of the group game against Sweden at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, kept Owen out of regular football for almost a year until April 2007. Owen's injury at the World Cup was inflamed the so-called "club-versus-country" line in the UK, centered on the world body's obligations governing FIFA and The Football Association (FA) for the cost of player injuries that occurred while on international duty. Newcastle are underestimated in a long time Owen will now be out of action in the upcoming Premier League and Cup competition as a result of World Cup injuries, especially as he has been out for half the season before the World Cup. Under the existing insurance arrangements between club and country, FIFA and the FA have paid Ã, £ 50,000 of  £ Ã, Ã,  £ 110,000 Owen weekly wages since he suffered injuries, amounting to around Ã,  £ 2 million for the time he out of action. In September 2006, Newcastle threatened to sue the FA for further compensation, for a reported figure of £ 20 million. Owen's case is a high profile follow-up to ongoing legal claims for compensation from FIFA for injuries inflicted by Abdelmajid Oulmers on international duty.

Newcastle's compensation claims include the cost of Ã,  £ 10 million of Owen's replacement purchase, Obafemi Martins, £ 6.2 million against Owen's wages when injured, possible long-term damage to Owen's fitness and ability, loss of league position and cup rivalry. progress, the depreciation of Owen's four-year contract, and the cost of medical care for Owen. In February 2007, FIFA made Newcastle a "final bid" of Ã,  £ 1 million. In April 2007, Newcastle threatened to take orders to stop the FA from picking Owen for England. The club finally reached a compromise settlement with FIFA and the FA; FIFA showed that the settlement was between Ã,  £ 6 million and Ã,  £ 7 million. The club, claiming that Owen's wages had "now been fully paid", stated that the overall compensation achieved amounted to  £ 10 million. As a result of Owen's compensation claims, the FA doubled their future insurance protection against British players up to £ 100,000, and FIFA introduced a compensation fund for injuries suffered in the World Cup.

Owen started light training on February 12, 2007, when a picture on the club's official website highlights Owen running and doing light training. He made a comeback from injury on 10 April 2007 in a 4-1 behind closed against Gretna, scoring after ten minutes and then setting up fellow striker Shola Ameobi before coming an hour later. Owen then started his first game for Newcastle in over a year, losing 1-0 against Reading on 30 April 2007. He played 90 full minutes, having a goal disallowed for offside. Owen was guided an hour to the Newcastle game with Watford on 13 May 2007, suffering a concussion after colliding with teammate Matty Pattison.

On May 9, 2007, Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd reacted angrily to reports that Owen could move to another club at the end of the 2006-07 season due to a release clause in his contract. A report in The Times reported that Owen could be available for less than Ã,  £ 10 million and could be a target for the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal. Despite this report, Shepherd warned Owen "to show loyalty" and warned him that "none of the four major clubs wanted it". In a video posted on YouTube, however, a group of Liverpool fans asked Shepherd if they could sign Owen again, he responded by saying that he would "bring Owen back to Liverpool" himself. Sheperd also expressed his displeasure with Owen's agent but praised Owen as a "good boy". This led many to believe that Owen would use his right to leave if the à £ 9 million valuation was matched. On June 10, 2007, Owen's new Newcastle manager, Sam Allardyce, confirmed the release clause in Owen's contract and admitted he was worried the club would not help to keep Owen away. On 12 July 2007, however, Owen committed his future to Newcastle, stating, "I believe that this could be a good time to be in Newcastle, that's why I'm more than happy to be here."

On July 17, 2007, he scored for Newcastle in a pre-season friendly against Hartlepool United. A few days later, Owen suffered a thigh injury during practice. Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce admits that Owen is likely to miss the start of the upcoming Premier League season due to an injury that "does not look as encouraging as we first expected". Owen made a comeback from injury at the friendly club on 13 August 2007 and declared himself available for the next Newcastle game, against Aston Villa, as well as England's upcoming international match. On August 29, 2007, Owen scored his first competitive goal for Newcastle since December 2005 when he scored in the League Cup against Barnsley. Three days later, he scored in the league with a late winner against Wigan Athletic.

At the end of September 2007, after an encouraging start to the season for Newcastle and England, it was reported that he would soon need surgery for a double hernia and would likely be absent for at least a month. In his first game back from a hernia operation, he scored a late goal coming from the bench to clinch a win for Newcastle over Everton.

In November 2007, Owen suffered a thigh injury while on international duty, setting him aside for six weeks. It revived a row of "club or country", with then Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce voicing his disappointment that Owen risked in a low-key low-key friendly against Austria.

After more than three months of goalless Owen scored the first goal of Kevin Keegan's second era in a 4-1 FA Cup third-round replay over Stoke City on January 16, 2008, though Keegan was only a spectator in the stands for this match.. Owen was awarded captain by Keegan on January 19, 2008. He scored his first league goal of 2008 on 3 February. Owen's 2-0 goal from Fulham on 22 March 2008, which marked Newcastle's first win under Keegan's second spell as manager, also marked the first time in his career at Newcastle that Owen had scored more goals for Newcastle than against them. On April 5, 2008, after he and his team performed poorly at the start of the season, Owen had scored six goals in six previous matches, with Newcastle recording four wins and two draws, lifting Newcastle to the midfield after relegation worries earlier. In the final game of the season, Owen scored in a 3-1 defeat at Everton, with a total of 11 goals, placing him in 13th position for the Premier League goal for the 2007-08 season.

Owen missed all the pre-season matches and training of the 2008-09 season due to the goiter attack, which also kept him out of international friendlies with the US and Trinidad and Tobago in May 2008. He also suffered a calf injury. During the summer months that kept him out of the opening game of the season against Manchester United at Old Trafford, Newcastle's 1-1 draw. He made his return in the second game of the season against Bolton Wanderers on August 23, 2008, coming in the 53rd minute for an injured Obafemi Martins. He scored the winner in 71 minutes, with the game ending 1-0. Three days later, he was appointed on the bench in a League Cup match away to Coventry City, he came on as a substitute and scored the winning goal in extra time in 2-3 victories. In the 2008-09 season, he appeared more consistent than in the previous season, scoring four goals in twelve league appearances.

Under the transfer rules, with the 2008-09 season being the final year of his contract with Newcastle, Owen will be allowed to sign pre-contract agreements with other clubs during January. On 22 December 2008 Owen refused a new contract offer from Newcastle but stated that he would not seek a move in the January transfer window instead of intending to postpone talks over his contract situation until the end of the season. With speculation over his continuing future in the second half of the season, Owen received a "substantial damage" in June at the High Court in London and a public apology following a story on May 15 in the Daily Express demands that due lack of interest from Premier League clubs, Owen's career was effectively completed and he intends to retire.

After a disastrous season in general for the club, culminating in former compatriot Owen Newcastle and England's Alan Shearer who was brought on as interim manager for the last eight games of the season, on the final day of the season on May 24, 2009, Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League for the first time in 15 years. On June 14, it was reported that the management company Owen Wasserman Media Group had sent a 34-page brochure that advertised Owen to some potential club. On June 22, Owen insists he will not return to sign a contract for Newcastle, with the option of moving to Premier League clubs, or other top foreign clubs. It is reported that Owen will not start negotiations with other clubs until after 30 June when, upon expiration of his contract, he will be eligible for a free transfer.

Manchester United

Debut season

On July 3, 2009, it was announced that Owen had signed a two-year contract with Premier League champions Manchester United. He says that the approach of manager Alex Ferguson comes from "out of the blue". He signed a pay-as-you-play deal and handed over the number 7 shirt left by Cristiano Ronaldo's departure to Real Madrid. The shirt had previously been worn by many of United's other top players for years, including Johnny Berry, George Best, Steve Coppell, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham.

Owen scored his first goal for United on his debut, scoring the winner in the 84th minute after coming on as a substitute in a pre-season friendly against Malaysia's XI; He follows this by scoring three more goals in United's preseason game. Owen made his league debut for United when he came on as a substitute against Birmingham City on August 16 in a 1-0 win, and scored his first goal in a game against Manchester United against Wigan Athletic on 22 August with a 5-0 score. win. On September 20, Owen scored his first goal at Old Trafford as he scored in the sixth minute in extra time against local rivals Manchester City to give United a 4-3 derby win. This means that Owen has now scored in his fourth derby, after a net in the Merseyside derby, the El ClÃÆ'¡sico and the Tyne-Wear derby in previous years. Owen struggled to remember the moment immediately after the goal, and said that it was classed as one of the most important.

On October 27, Owen scored in a 2-0 away win against Barnsley to make United qualify for the League Cup fourth round. On 3 November, Owen scored his first Champions League goal for Manchester United, as he grabbed United's first in a 3-3 draw against CSKA Moscow. Owen's seemingly slim chance to get a place in England's Fabio Capello's squad for 2010 World Cup finals in 2010 got a boost when on December 8, 2009, Owen scored his first hat-trick for Manchester United in a 3-1 away win against VfL Wolfsburg in the League Champions, his first hat-trick since 2005. On 28 February 2010, Owen scored United's first goal in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the 2010 League Cup final but had to be replaced after stopping in 42 minutes.. Originally considered a minor injury, on 5 March was announced Owen needed surgery on his hamstring, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.

2010-11

Owen scored his first goal for United back from injury in a 7-1 pre-season win against Ireland's XI League on 4 August 2010 at the newly built Aviva Stadium. On 22 September 2010, Owen scored his first goal of the season as he scored twice during a 5-2 away win over Scunthorpe United in the League Cup third round. Four days later, Owen scored his first league goal of the season as he netted United's second goal with his first touch in a 2-2 draw against Bolton Wanderers. Owen's first goal in 2011 came in a 2-1 FA Cup United win over Southampton at St Mary's Stadium on 29 January. On 25 February, United manager Alex Ferguson said that Owen is an important part of his squad for the remainder of the season. However, he suffered a groin injury and was absent in his next four team matches. His return match was on March 19 when he returned to the bench for United's game against Bolton.

By the time of United's last second match of the season, he has achieved the number of league appearances needed to clinch the first title in 15 seasons as a professional. The game, on May 14, 2011, only requires United to play with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park to win the title, and a 1-1 draw secures it for them. Owen is a substitute player not used in the game. Owen scored United's last goal in their last league game of the season, at home to Blackpool, where Red Devils won 4-2.

Owen was an unused substitute in the dull final defeat of Manchester United's Champions League, marking the end of the season. He signed a one-year extension for his contract on June 1, 2011.

2011-12

Owen started his first game of the season in the League Cup third round against Leeds United. He scored twice in the first half, helping United to advance to the fourth round with a 3-0 victory. Play style

In his prime, Owen was greatly respected for his great moves, opportunism and agility, and his technical skills and his view of goals, allowing him to be considered one of the greatest English and Premier League strikers of his generation.
