Borussia MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach

Growing up in MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach, West Germany, Jansen joined Borussia MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach from local SV MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach in 1993 and progressed through the ranks of the club's academy. It was not until 2003 when then-MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach manager Ewald Lienen named him an unused substitute in the club's Bundesliga fixture in a 2-0 loss against Hannover 96 on September 19, 2003. Ironically, this turned out to be the ultimate Lienen game in charge of MÃÆ'Â permainan nchengladbach and Jansen return to the U19 side.

The start of the 2004-05 season saw Jansen play for Borussia MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach II in the fourth division under manager Horst KÃÆ'¶ppel. In late 2004, Jansen was given a first-team chance under Dick Advocaat, who gave him his debut for the team. They lost 6-0 against Hertha BSC on 4 December 2004. During the match, which saw Hertha BSC lead 5-0 in the second half, it worsened as she awarded a penalty, resulting in a successful penalty from Marcelinho ParaÃÆ'ba to score Hertha's sixth goal. Nevertheless, Advocaat continued to use him in the first team after injury to club captain Christian Ziege. On January 28, 2005, Jansen signed his first professional contract with the club, keeping it up until 2008. He continues to be the first regular team at the club, playing as a left-back and because of this, he gets a call for the German Under-21 national team as well.

It was not until April 3, 2005 when Jansen scored his first goal for MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach in a 2-2 draw against VfL Bochum. In his first season, Jansen went on to make 18 appearances, scoring one goal, in the 2004-05 season despite competing with Filip Daems for the left back position.

In the 2005-06 season, Jansen continued to be the first regular team, playing left-left and left-midfielder and his impressive performances earned him a call from the senior German team. Because of his good performance, Jansen signed a contract extension with the club, guarding him until 2009. After the start of the season, he started every game until he suffered a calf injury. After returning from injury, he scored his first goal of the season on December 17, 2005 in a 4-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. In April, Jansen began playing in left-midfield after the Daems were used regularly at left-back. At the end of the 2005-06 season, Jansen went on to make 33 appearances and score one goal in all competitions.

After the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Jansen was linked with a move from Borussia MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach, with top clubs in Germany interested in signing him. However, the club insisted on not selling it, stating that it was not for sale. Jansen started the 2006-07 season playing at left back, sending Daems in the process. Jansen remained in left-back position until he suffered a knee injury in early October. After returning to training in January, he returned to the first team on January 27, 2007, in a 3-1 defeat to Energie Cottbus. Jansen then scored his first goal of the season on 2 March 2007, in a 2-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld. At the end of the 2006-07 season, which saw the club relegated to 2. Bundesliga, Jansen has made 24 appearances and scored one goal in all competitions.

Bayern Munich

In March 2007, Bayern Munich expressed interest in Jansen after his performances for both Borussia MÃÆ'¶nchengladbach and the German national team. In May 2007, it was announced that Jansen would move to Bayern in July 2007 for a transfer fee of around EUR10 million. Despite media concerns, he remains largely on the bench, Jansen said he is not afraid of being on the bench, insisting that the move was an important step in his career.

Jansen made his Bayern Munich debut in a friendly, coming for Philipp Lahm, in the 46th minute of a 4-0 win over Swiss team FC Schaffhausen. Jansen scored his first goal in his Bayern career in a friendly in a 13-0 win over FC 07 Albstadt on 15 July 2007. He made his Bundesliga debut for Bayern on the opening day of the 2007-08 season with a 3-0 score. won Hansa Rostock. Soon after, Jansen suffered an injury in club training and was absent throughout August. It was not until 15 September 2007 when he returned to the first team, in a 1-1 draw against Schalke 04. Jansen played in every game until he suffered an ankle injury around November that kept him out for three months. Around January, Jansen went back to training to keep his fitness. On March 1, 2008, he returned to the first team in a 1-0 victory over Schalke 04. Despite suffering another injury towards the end of the 2007-08 season, he remained in left-back position during the current season. Bayern won the Bundesliga with Jansen making 33 appearances in all competitions.

In the 2008-09 season, Jansen found himself on the bench to open two Bayern matches from the new Bundesliga campaign after falling out of favor with manager JÃÆ'¼rgen Klinsmann, due to their differences.

Hamburger SV

On August 28, 2008, Hamburger SV announced Jansen has signed a five-year contract until 2013 with a transfer fee of EUR8 million. Two days after signing, he made his Hamburg debut in a 4-2 win over Arminia Bielefeld. After debuting, he was given few major first-team appearances and became a regular first team, playing in midfield. However, in mid-October Jansen suffered a muscle injury that kept him out for months. On November 8, 2008, he played again as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund. His first goal came on 22 February 2009, in a 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen. After suffering an injury that kept him out of action throughout April, Jansen scored on his return on May 3, 2009 in a 1-1 draw against Hertha BSC. In the 2008-09 season, Jansen made 40 appearances and scored 4 goals in all competitions.

At the start of the 2009-10 season, Jansen suffered a tearing collateral ligament that kept him out for two months. After returning from injury, he scored his first goal on 8 November 2009 in a 2-2 draw against Hannover 96. By the end of 2009, Jansen added four more goals in all competitions, including three goals in three Bundesliga games between December 12, 2009 and 16 January 2010, against 1. FC NÃÆ'¼rnberg, Werder Bremen and SC Freiburg. The combination of flu and ligament tears restricted the appearance of his first team during the 2009-10 season. During the 2009-10 season, Jansen made 28 appearances and scored 9 goals in all competitions.

In the 2010-11 season, Jansen started the season playing at left back. He continued to play a role until he was plagued by an injury that kept him out for three months. Jansen returned on 29 January 2011 to the first team, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 2-0 defeat against 1. FC NÃÆ'¼rnberg. He scored his first goal of the season on 26 February 2011 in a 1-1 draw against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. However, he suffered a hip injury in training that kept him out for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, Jansen finished the 2010-11 season, making 17 appearances and scoring twice in all competitions.

By the 2011-12 season, Jansen is associated with clubs like Milan and VfL Wolfsburg. But Jansen insists that he has not left the club and stayed along the summer transfer window. Jansen finally re-trained from injury ahead of the new season and returned in the opening game of the season against Borussia Dortmund, scoring for Robert Tesche with a 3-1 defeat. After returning to the first team from injury, Jansen started playing in midfield positions, either on the left wing or left-midfield for much of the season. On 5 November 2011, he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. Despite suffering injuries during the season, Jansen went on to make 31 appearances and scored 5 times in all competitions.

Prior to the 2012-13 season, it was reported that Jansen extended his contract with Hamburg until 2015. At the start of the season, Jansen started in the left midfield for the first three games before moving on to left-back, who he played most of the season. However, throughout 2012, Jansen was hit by injury. On January 20, 2013, he returned from injury in a 1-1 draw against 1. FC NÃÆ'¼rnberg. Jansen scored his first goal of the season on April 28, 2013, in a 4-1 defeat against Schalke 04. At the end of the 2012-13 season, Jansen has made 29 appearances, scoring one goal in all competitions.

In the 2013-14 season, Jansen continued to play in left-back for sides before suffering a broken leg bone. After returning to the first team, Jansen then scored his first goal of the season on 28 September 2013 in a 2-2 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. In the absence of Rafael van der Vaart, Jansen captained for Hamburg for his first time in Hamburg on November 24, 2013 in a 3-1 victory, and went to the side captain four more times in all competitions later this season. Although he was linked to a move from the club in the January transfer window, he suffered an injury during the 2013-14 season developing. Nevertheless, Jansen returned to the first team and played on both legs of the relegation play-off game against Greuther FÃÆ'¼rth, in which a 1-1 draw put Hamburg to their Bundesliga status on away goals. In the 2013-14 season, Jansen has made 27 appearances and scored one goal in all competitions.

In the 2014-15 season, with one year remaining on his contract, Jansen remains at the club despite the signing of new Matthias Ostrzolek. Despite the competition, Jansen initially plays at left back before playing in the center-left for most of the season, as Ostrzolek is preferred at left-back. However, by the end of 2014, Jansen was plagued by injuries. When the 2014-15 season took place, Jansen's return was short-lived as he continued to suffer injuries. At the end of the 2014-15 season, Jansen has made 16 appearances and scored 2 goals in all competitions.

At the end of the 2014-15 season, Hamburg chose not to renew Jansen's contract.

Retirement

Being a free agent, Jansen can not take on a new club because he believes Hamburg is the only team for him. Many criticize his actions, believing he made the wrong decision when he announced his retirement from the game at the age of 29. In response to criticism, Jansen stated that he is not a fan of the scene behind the football business.

After his retirement, Jansen joined Sky Sport as a scholar.

International career

Youth Team

Having previously played for the junior team, Jansen was called up by the German Under-21 national team for the first time in November 2004. He made his German Under-21 debut on 16 November 2004, where he made his first start and played 62 minutes before being replaced in a draw 1-1 against Poland. Jansen then scored Germany's first U21 goal on 16 February 2005 in a 4-0 win over Wales. Jansen went on to make four appearances and scored one goal for the U21 Germany team.

Senior team

In September 2005, Jansen was summoned by the senior team for the first time in a friendly against South Africa and against Slovakia on September 3, 2005 in Bratislava. He made his debut in that match, coming on as a half-time replacement for Thomas Hitzlsperger when Germany lost 2-0. Jansen then played the whole match in the next game against South Africa on September 7, 2005, in a 4-2 win for the team.

After appearing in further internationals for Germany, Jansen was later named in the last 23-man Germany squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He initially started as a first choice on the left with a left-back who normally moved Philipp Lahm back to accommodate him. After several under-par performances before the tournament, manager JÃÆ'¼rgen Klinsmann took her hostage and put Lahm in left back again. With Lahm in good form, Jansen is limited to just one appearance throughout the tournament, Germany's bronze medal match against Portugal.

Jansen finally got a recall for some UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers, including a 6-0 beating of San Marino where he scored his first international goal. Despite his sustained injury concerns against Serbia in a friendly on 31 May 2008, Jansen remains part of Joachim LÃÆ'¶w's squad for the main tournament. Jansen played his first game in the tournament, playing a full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win against first group opponents Poland. He was subsequently relegated to Germany's 2-1 defeat in the second group stage match against Croatia, but suffered a shoulder injury. Jansen returned as a substitute against Portugal in the quarterfinals with a 3-2 victory and once again against Turkey in the semi-final, winning 3-2. In the final, Jansen came on as a second-half substitute for Lahm, as he played and survived for the rest of the match, who saw Germany lose 1-0 against Spain.

Before the World Cup in South Africa, Jansen suffered an injury and the LÃÆ'¶w manager doubted that Jansen would get into the German squad. However in May 2010, Jansen was initially included in the provisional squad before being included for the last 23 player squad the following month. After appearing twice as an unused replacement, with Holger Badstuber taking the left-back position, Jansen made his first World Cup appearance, coming on as a second-half substitute in a 1-0 win over Ghana. He then went on to make two more appearances as a substitute in a game against Argentina and Spain. He played in the starting line-up and scored in 3-2 2010 third place World Cup triumph for Germany against Uruguay.

Germany's first competitive match after the World Cup in early September 2010, winning 1-0 in the Euro 2012 qualifier against Belgium, is the next international appearance. In October 2010, he was called up for the match in qualifying against Turkey and Kazakhstan, but had to cancel because of injury. As a result, Jansen has not been called up by the national for nearly three years, including absences in the German squad for Euro 2012. He later expressed his disappointment at not being called up for the national team.

On March 24, 2013, Jansen again accepted the invitation for the German national team when he was re-nominated for the 2014 World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan. On March 26, 2013, he appeared as a substitute in this game in stoppage time for Marco Reus. On 29 May 2013, Jansen made his first debut in a few years and played the whole match when Germany won 4-2 against Ecuador. He played on 15 November 2013 in a friendly at San Siro in Milan against Italy, and four days later in a 1-0 friendly win at Wembley Stadium in London against England.

On March 5, 2014, Jansen played in a friendly at Mercedes-Benz-Arena in Stuttgart against Chile in the starting XI; he was injured in the 28th minute and was replaced by Marcel Schmelzer. On May 8, 2014, Jansen was nominated for the World Cup squad early in 2014, despite a long injury. However, six days later, on May 14, 2014, he was cut from the World Cup squad.
