Initial years

Born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Curry grew up in Grottoes and played high school basketball at Fort Defiance, where he used his coach warehouse to practice shooting every day. He finished as an all-time leading scorer in school history, and was named McDonald All-American in 1982. Curry also played baseball, and won the state championship in both sports; he was chosen by the Texas Rangers in the 1982 Major League Baseball draft.

College career

Curry is a four-year starter at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg along with fellow Bobby Beecher colleagues Perry Young, Al Young and Keith Colbert. The Hokies appeared at the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 1983 and 1984, finishing third. Although the team qualified for a major bid to the NCAA tournaments in 1985 and 1986, it lost in the first round on both occasions. In his senior season in 1986, Curry was named the best player of the year at the Metro Conference. Before the 1986-87 season, the NCAA basketball did not feature a three-point line; Curry's long range shooting is not appreciated, as it will become an NBA career. (In the early and mid-1980s, the three-point line was introduced at many conferences at various distances, but not recognized by the NCAA.)

Curry also played baseball for Virginia Tech. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in round 14 of the 1985 MLB draft but chose to continue playing basketball.

Curry finished his career at Virginia Tech with 2,389 points (second all time) and 295 steal (all-time leader) in basketball, and a 6-1 record with 3.81 ERA in baseball. NBA Career>

Curry was elected to the 15th overall pick by Utah Jazz in the 1986 NBA draft. He played a season in Utah before trading to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987, where he spent the 1987-88 season. He was selected by one of the two NBA teams for the 1988-89 season, Charlotte Hornets, in the expansion draft after he was provided by the Cavaliers. Curry spent 10 seasons in Charlotte, mostly coming off the bench for an instant offense, utilizing a three-point shot. He was a regular in the discussion for the Sixth Man of the Year, but did not really win the award until the 1993-94 season. He currently ranks among statistics leaders of all time franchises in points, games played, three field goal points created and tried, and three percentage points of field goals. After leaving the franchise in 1998, he was the last remaining player of his first season 10 years earlier.

Curry played a season for the Milwaukee Bucks before playing his last three seasons in the NBA for the Toronto Raptors. He held career averages of 11.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. Curry retired as an all-time goalscorer in Hornets history with 9,839 points.
