William Anthony Parker Jr. (born May 17, 1982) is a professional French basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs from the National Basketball Association (NBA). The son of a professional basketball player, Parker played for two years in the French basketball league, before entering the 2001 NBA draft. He was selected by the San Antonio Spurs by selecting a total of 28 in the draft, and quickly became the starting point of their keeper. Parker has won four NBA Championships (2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014), all with Spurs.
With his speed and high percentage of goals, Parker has been crowned into six NBA All-Star matches, three Second Team All-NBAs, and All-NBA Third Team. He is also an NBA MVP 2007. The severe injury to his left quadriceps tendon in Game 2 in the second round of playoff 2017 ended his season.
While playing with the senior national side of France, Parker was named the 2013 EuroBasket MVP, following his side's win over Lithuania, in a gold medal match. He finished as the tournament's top scorer, averaging 19 points per game. In 2015, he became the all time top scorer in the EuroBasket competition, a record broken by Pau Gasol two years later.

Parker was born in Bruges, Belgium, and grew up in France. His father, Tony Parker Sr., an African American, played basketball at Loyola University Chicago as well as professionals abroad. His mother, Pamela Firestone, is a Dutch model. Uncle Parker Jan Wienese is an Olympic gold medalist at the oar. Parker enjoys a close relationship with his brothers, and they often attend their father's basketball matches together. At first, Parker was more interested in football, but after watching the evolution of Michael Jordan become a global basketball superstar during his summer trip to his father's hometown in Chicago, he changed his mind. Parker's two younger brothers are also heavily involved in basketball; T.J. and Pierre will continue to play basketball at college and professional levels. When Parker builds his skills, he plays a point guard position, acknowledging that his speed and agility make this position ideal for him. He was finally asked to attend INSEP in Paris. After playing in the French amateur league for two seasons, Parker became a professional and signed a contract with Paris Basket Racing in 1999.
In the summer of 2000, Parker was invited to the Nike Hoop Summit in Indianapolis. In the contest between the All-Stars of America and Europe, Parker recorded 20 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. Frenchman's appearance sparked a recruiting war among several colleges, including UCLA and Georgia Tech. Parker decided to cancel the NCAA and live in France; he spent the next year with Paris Basketball Racing in the French League before entering the 2001 NBA draft.

Professional career
San Antonio Spurs (2001-present)
First Championship
Prior to the 2001 NBA draft, Parker was invited to the San Antonio Spurs summer camp. Coach Gregg Popovich told him to play against Spurs and former NBA player Lance Blanks. Parker is overwhelmed by Blank's tight and physical defense, and Popovich is ready to send him away after just 10 minutes. But after seeing the best of the best drama of Parker, Popovich decided to invite Parker a second time. This time, Parker made a better impression on Blank; the Frenchman later described Blanks as "one person who destroys the crew". But while Popovich decided that Parker deserved a gamble, Spurs still had to hope that the other teams would not pick Parker during the draft. Parker's name is hardly mentioned in the pre-draft prediction, and the point guard is drafted 28 overall by Spurs on the day of the draft.
Having initially played reserves for Antonio Daniels, Parker became a starter and made 77 regular season appearances in his rookie season, averaging 9.2 points, 4.3 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 29.4 minutes per game. When he played against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 30, 2001, he became the third French player to play in the NBA game, after Tariq Abdul-Wahad and JÃÆ'Ã| rÃÆ'Ã'me MoÃÆ'soso. At the end of the season, the rookie led San Antonio in assists and steals, and was named for the All-Rookie First Team for 2001-02, becoming the first alien guard born to gain honor.
In 2002-03, Parker played in all 82 regular season games as a keeper of San Antonio's starting point in a team largely overhauled from previous years. He improved his regular season stats, averaging 15.5 points per game (ppg), 5.3 assists per game (apg) and 2.6 rebounds per game (rpg). Parker's role as a team playmaker is reflected in his team's lead in helping on 49 occasions. During the NBA All-Star weekend of 2003, Parker represented the Sophomores in the Rookie Challenge, and also participated in the first Skills Challenge. In the post season, Spurs, led by Tim Duncan, beat the New Jersey Nets 4-2 in the final, and Parker grabbed his first NBA championship ring. Despite the win, Parker struggled with inconsistent play throughout the playoffs, and was often replaced by more experienced guards, Steve Kerr and Speedy Claxton at the end of the game.
Second championship
Despite winning the championship with Spurs, doubts remain in Parker's future. The Spurs have tried and failed to get New Jersey Nets' Jason Kidd, but Parker told coach Popovich that he wants to be a keeper of San Antonio's starting point. Parker played well during the regular season, recording 14.7 ppg, 5.5 apg and 3.2 rpg. However, Spurs were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference semi-finals in the 2004 NBA Playoff, and were denied a back-to-back title.
During the 2004-05 season, Parker recorded a regular season stats increase, counting 16.6 ppg, 6.1 apg and 3.7 rpg with career height. He also ranks 13th in the league in total assists, and third among point guards in a percentage of field goals. Spurs were strong in the playoffs, and Parker was instrumental in victories over the Denver Nuggets, Seattle SuperSonics and Phoenix Suns. However, Parker fought in the Final series against the Detroit Pistons. Spurs colleagues Manu GinÃÆ'óbili and Brent Barry often take over playmaking duties because Parker can not perform as well as he does in the regular season. Nevertheless, the Spurs won their third NBA championship by defeating defending champions 4-3 in the 2005 NBA Finals.
Third championship
Parker was selected for the first time in his career as the NBA All-Star for the 2005-06 season as he managed 18.9 ppg and an impressive 548 in the percentage of field goals. Parker's average score is even higher than Duncan's, and his performance spurs the Spurs to a 63-19 winning record and qualifiers for the 2006 NBA Playoff. However, the top Spurs again can not win back-to-back titles as they are eliminated in the round. second by the Dallas Mavericks.
On 14 February 2007, after providing consistent figures in the first half of the 2006-07 season, Parker was selected to play in the 2007 NBA All-Star Game as a reserve guard. With Parker operating as a starting point for the keeper in the 2006-07 season, Spurs qualified for the 2007 NBA Playoff and finished second in the Southwest Division. In the Western Conference Semifinals, Spurs meet with Phoenix Suns led by NBA MVP Steve Nash twice and in power. After eliminating the Suns, Spurs defeated Utah Jazz 4-1 to win the Western Conference Finals. Parker and Spurs went on to face the Cleveland Cavaliers and sweep them 4-0 to win the 2007 NBA Finals. In this series, Parker consistently beat Cavalier's Daniel Gibson and All-Defensive Team member Larry Hughes and scored 24.5 points, with a high percentage of field goals of 56.8% and 57.1% from three points. For her performance, she was named the NBA Finals MVP 2007, becoming the first European player to receive the award.
Short fall
In the 2007-08 regular season, Parker recorded the same average as the previous two seasons for points and rebounds, and slightly increased his assist per game on average. Spurs finished third in the Western Conference and faced the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the 2008 NBA Playoff. For the third time in four years, San Antonio triumphed over Phoenix; Parker has an incredible first-round series, averaging nearly 30 points and 7 assists games. In the next round against New Orleans Hornets by Chris Paul, Spurs dropped the first two games before responding with a strong win in the third game. In the game, Parker recorded a double-double with 31 points and 11 assists. The experienced Spurs took seven games to beat the Hornets, but were unable to get past the Los Angeles Lakers in the Final Conference, and Spurs once again failed to win back-to-back NBA championships.
San Antonio descended to a rocky start in their 2008-09 NBA season, losing in the first three contests. In their fourth game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, however, Parker scored a career-high 55 points to lead the Spurs to their first win in the campaign. The Spurs recovered pretty quickly, and approached the All-Star break which was ranked second in the Conference. With Parker on average having the highest points per game, he was named a reserve for the 2009 All-Star game. Spurs without a very influential bodyguard, GinÃÆ'óbili, for the season, and greater responsibility fell on Parker's shoulders. He helped lead the team to a 54-28 record and the third seed for the playoffs. In Game 4 of the first round against Dallas, Parker equaled George Gervin's playoff franchise record for points in the half by 31. However, Spurs eventually lost 4-1, bending out of playoff rounds in the first half for the first time since 2000. Parker's 28.6 points and 4.2 rebounds per game broke the previous best playoffs average of 22.4 points and 3.7 rebounds. On May 13, 2009, he was appointed to the All-NBA Third Team.
During the 2011-12 NBA season, Parker helped the Spurs to a best record in the West for the second consecutive season; the team tied the Chicago Bulls to the best overall record in the league. On February 4, 2012, Parker became the all-time relief leader of the franchise with 4,477, surpassing Avery Johnson, adding 42 points in a win against Oklahoma City Thunder. Spurs secured their 50th consecutive victory season despite a lockout (a new NBA record), and Parker received his fourth All-Star nod. He finished fifth in the MVP award voting, receiving four first place voices. At the end of the season, Spurs signed Parker's long-time friend Boris Diaw, who is claimed to be no longer available at the Charlotte Bobcats. In the NBA Playoff 2012, Parker averaged 20.1 points and 6.8 assists as the Spurs swept through the first two rounds, defeating the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers. In the Western Conference Finals, Spurs face a young Oklahoma City Thunder. After winning Game 1 and Game 2, 101-98 and 120-111, and leading 2-0, Spurs lost four games in a row, thus losing in the 4-2 series.
In their second game of the 2012-13 season, Spurs faced the Thunder in a rematch of the previous Western Conference Finals, and Parker scored the winner to secure the win for Spurs. On December 10, 2012, Parker got his first career threefold after 825 regular season games against the Houston Rockets in extra time with 27 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. He is the 4th player in NBA history that has 800 or more games in their career before their first triple-double, joining Karl Malone (860), Patrick Ewing (834), and Cedric Maxwell (824). Parker was named the Western Conference Player of the Month for the month of January 2013 for leading Spurs to a 12-3 record, and the best record in the NBA. He averaged 21.9 points per game and 7.9 assists per game that month while shooting 56.3% of the field. He became the first Spurs player to receive honor since Tim Duncan in April 2002. On 21 May 2013, Parker recorded a career high of 18 assists to go with 15 points in the final victory of the Spurs' Western Conference 2 game over the Memphis Grizzlies.
In the NBA Final 1 Final 2013 against the reigning champions Miami Heat, Parker hit the clutch jump shot from the glass with 5.2 seconds left in the game, securing a 92-88 victory for San Antonio. Spurs eventually lost in seven games.
Fourth championship
In May 2014, Tony Parker along with Manu GinÃÆ'óbili and Tim Duncan hooked the record for most wins in the Playoffs History by three players playing together; a record held by the LA Lakers trio of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Cooper with 110 wins. Spurs went on to defeat the Thunder in six games and advance to the NBA Finals for the second year in a row. San Antonio will once again face the Miami Heat and will win the 2014 NBA Finals in five games. This victory gave Parker the fourth championship and the fifth championship to Spurs.
Pursuing the fifth championship
On August 1, 2014, Parker signed a three-year, $ 43.3 million contract extension with Spurs. Spurs finished the 2014-15 season with a 55-27 record, but lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Los Angeles Clippers in seven games. Parker struggled in the playoffs with an injury and averaged 10.9 points on the game at 36%.
In the 2015-16 season, Parker helped the Spurs win the 67 best franchise games while averaging 11.9 points per game. In the 2016 playoff round, Spurs swept the Memphis Grizzlies in the first half, but were knocked out in the second round by Oklahoma City Thunder in six games.
Heading into the 2016-17 season, Parker lost old team mate Tim Duncan to retire. Spurs ended the season with a 61-21 record, as they recorded a 60-win back-to-back season for the first time in franchise history. Parker played 63 games and averaged 10.1 points per game, the lowest average since the rookie season. In the 2017 playoffs, Spurs were once again matched with the Memphis Grizzlies in the first half. San Antonio again beat Memphis 4-2, with Parker averaging 16.3 points per game in the series. After scoring 18 points in Game 2 of the second half, winning against the Houston Rockets, Parker left the game with the breakup of his left quadriceps tendon that ended his season. Game 3 of the series marks San Antonio's first postseason game without Parker since 2001, which ended NBA 221 straight playoffs for Parker. The injury required surgery and caused some people to suspect Parker could lose significant time, if he returns at all.
On November 27, 2017, in a 115-108 win over the Dallas Mavericks, Parker had six points and four assists in 14 minutes in his first appearance since tearing up the quadriceps tendon. On November 29th, Parker had 10 points and five assists while playing 18 minutes in his second game back.
ASVEL (2011)
During the 2011 NBA lockout, Parker signed a contract with ASVEL, the team in which he owns the shares. However, unlike other players who signed profitable overseas contracts during the lockout, Parker chose to play in his home country to earn minimum wage. Parker, who in summer has received a four-year extension of Spurs worth more than $ 50 million, receives only $ 2,000 per month from ASVEL. He also paid his own insurance, which reportedly cost $ 250,000 for three months.

Player profile
Standing six feet 2 inches (1.88 m) tall and weighing 185 pounds (84 kg), Parker plays a point guard position and has established himself as a powerful offensive player. Chosen by his colleagues in a 2007 poll as one of the fastest players in the NBA, he often slashed into a basket for layup or tear shots. Despite its relatively small size for basketball players, he led the league in "points in the paint" for most of the 2005-06 season.
Early in his NBA career, Parker was still regarded as an erratic ball shooter and during the 2005 season, Coach Popovich decided to work on his aspect of the game. Coach fired Spurs, Chip Engelland, forbidding Parker to fire a three-point shot, and among other things, correcting his shot and thumb position. As a result, in the 2006-07 season, Parker has reduced his three-point shot with 117 while photographing 147 times more field effort compared to 2005, and his accuracy increased by 4% (field goals and three-point shots) and he can connect on 78% free throw of the season. The percentage of Parker's field goals is also high for point guard, and his speed also makes him a fast-paced player. However, his style of play has a bad effect on his knee (tendinitis).
