Character history

Julia Wainwright arrived in Santa Barbara in May 1985 to help her sister, Augusta Lockridge, who had been blinded by an accident in a tunnel. Julia is a strong and independent business lawyer and entrepreneur. Julia soon fell in love with Jack Lee, a man who later turned out to be Jerry Cooper, his cousin-like. Julia was then disappointed when she fell in love when she was dating David Laurent, a man accused of murdering his wife, Madeline. Realizing that he had bad luck with men, Julia decided to stay single and concentrate on her career and on her goal of having children.

Julia decides to ask Mason's lawyer, Capwell, to help her make the baby under contract. Although her sister Augusta's family hates Capwell and Julia does not really care about Mason personally, she thinks her son might be healthy and intelligent. In addition, he felt confident that there was no possibility of emotional involvement for both of them and that Mason would never interfere with his desire to raise his own child. Mason accepted the idea even though he was then involved with a woman named Victoria (Tori) Lane. Mason and Julia started a baby making business, but soon began to fall in love. They do not want to confess their feelings to others because of their wounded history in their love (and their false beliefs) that others see the relationship as a mere contractual relationship. Angry words caused Mason to ask to be released from the contract. Shortly afterwards, on the night when Julia's pregnancy was confirmed, Mason asked Tori to marry him. She is urged into this marriage to protect her brother Eden Capwell from knowing that her lover Cruz Castillo is the father of Tori's unborn child. Mason and Julia (who were not aware for a while that Cruz was the father of Tori's baby), grew closer when Julia's pregnancy grew and even more when Julia gave birth to their daughter, Samantha. Mason and Julia finally admit they love each other, and Mason leaves Victoria to be with Julia and Samantha.

Mason is accused of killing a man named Mark McCormick whose bones are found in a boat shed on the Capwell plantation. Mason leaves town to investigate Mark's murder and clear his name. Julia goes looking for her, aided by a priest, Father Michael Donnelly. Julia discovers that Mason is allegedly killed after an explosion. In fact, Mason suffers from amnesia and believes he is Sonny Sprocket, a Las Vegas entertainer. Gina DeMott, Mason's former lover and stepmother, convinced "Sonny" to gain Capwell's wealth by pretending to be Mason. Julia, seeing "Sonny" and Gina together, and knowing Mason's previous involvement with Gina, abandoned her and found comfort in the arms of Donnelly's father. At the wedding "Sonny" and Gina, Mason was shot and he got his memory back. Mason can then explain to Julia what happened, and the couple is reunited and finally married.

Their reunion was challenged when the body of former Mason lover Sasha Schmidt was discovered. Julia and Mason hide the corpse and eventually discover that she was accidentally killed by Laura Asher, wife of the county attorney. Mason is increasingly incapable of handling his problems without resorting to alcohol, and Julia finally decides to leave him for his own good and the good of their daughter.

Julia sought consolation with Dash Nichols and spent the night with her. The next day, Julia thinks to sleep with Dash, who then forces her to make love to her again. Julia accuses her of rape, but Dash is not punished. Julia sought justice by kidnapping Dash and forcing her to admit what she did to him.

Mason and Julia reunite and finally remarry. They move to the Ballymoor house, where their daughter Samantha developed a serious illness that was eventually cured by Micah DeAngelis. When everything returns to normal, Julia and Mason want to have another child together. They consider adopting the unborn child of Gracie Lee Lively, a girl they give protection, but before they can make a decision, Julia learns that she is pregnant.
