John W. Ladenburg Sr. (September 19, 1949) was appointed to Tacoma City Council in 1982 and elected for full term in 1984. He was elected as Pierce District Prosecutor in 1986, defeating the ruling Bill Griffies. Ladenburg was re-elected the Prosecutor three times, becoming the first person elected to the prosecutor's office more than twice. He was elected Pierce County Executive in 2000 defeating County Council Member Jan Shabro, receiving 59.6% of the vote. He was re-elected as the County Executive in 2004, in November 2008. One of Ladenburg's major achievements at the office was spearheading the development of Chambers Bay Golf Course at University Place, a municipal facility that hosted American Amateur 2010 and US Open 2015 golf championship.
Ladenburg was born in Leavenworth, Washington. In 1967 he graduated from High School Stadium in Tacoma, Washington. He received a bachelor's degree in political science (honors) in 1971 and a law degree in 1974, both from Gonzaga University. After graduation, he began his career as a trial lawyer. Ladenburg is involved in several high profile criminal cases including Federal Salmon Scam trials and County Pierce County rape trials.
His wife, Connie, underwent two periods in Tacoma City Council from 2002-2010, he was elected a member of the State Legislature in 2010, serving a term of office and then elected to the Pierce County Council in 2012. His brother, Barry, was appointed to Sea-Tac City Council in 2008 and left office in 2010, then re-elected to the Council in 2012. His brother, David Ladenburg, was a municipal Judge of the District Court selected in Tacoma, serving his third term.
In 2009 Ladenburg returned to private practice. He is a Legal Counsel at Sadler Ladenburg law firm in Tacoma. He practiced personal injury law with his two sons, John Ladenburg, Jr. and Erik Ladenburg.
