David Grier Martin III (born October 21, 1968) is a member of the Democrat North Carolina General Assembly representing the 34th House District state. The district covers the northern part of Raleigh in Wake County. He is a lawyer from Raleigh and is the son of D.G. Martin.
Martin was first elected in the 2004 election, defeating presidential candidate Don Munford. Martin defeated Republic J.H. Ross in the November 2006 and 2008 elections, and Republican Steve Henion in 2010. He chose not to run for re-election in 2012 after redistricting placed him in the same district as his fellow Democrats. Deborah Ross. But in 2013, Ross resigned from the legislature, and with his support, local Democrats chose Martin to replace him for the rest of his tenure. Martin served as Chair of the Joint House Democratic Conference.
During his first term in the House, Martin at one point led together with the Transportation Subcommittee of the Allocation Committee and headed the Security, Military, and Veterans Affairs Committee. He received the "Legislator of the Year" award from the American Veterans of North Carolina, Pesticide Education Project (now Toxic Free NC) "Legislative Leadership" award, National Guard Association of the United States Charles Dick Medal of Merit, Brain Injury of North Carolina's "Our Hero Award, "and was named" Freshman of the Year "by the North Carolina Conservation Council. In 2010 Martin was named "Environmental Defender" by the NC Conservation Voter League. National and state democrats recruited Martin to advance to the US Senate against Elizabeth Dole in 2008, but he refused to spend time with his young family. In 2011 Martin was appointed by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta to serve in the Armed Forces Policy Board. Martin is named Rodel Fellow Institute Aspen 2014.
Martin is currently a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve and served in Afghanistan in 2002-03. He is a graduate of the Air Force Air School, Assault Air School, and the Field Artillery Officer Course.
Martin graduated from Davidson College and the University of North Carolina School of Law where he served as the Notes Editor of the North Carolina Law Review . He also has an LL.M degree in Military Law (International and Operational Law Concentration) from the Public Advocate Judge School. He married a girl.
