Charles L. Becton is a lawyer, former judge of the Court of Appeals of North Carolina, and former president of the North Carolina Bar Association (the first African-American man to hold the post). In 2012-2013, he is the temporary chancellor of North Carolina Central University after his retirement from Charlie Nelms. Then, shortly before he completed the assignment, he was appointed chancellor while Elizabeth City State University after retiring from Willie Gilchrist, effective July 1, 2013.
Originally from Morehead City, North Carolina, Becton spent his formative years at Ayden. Becton was educated at Howard University (B.A., 1966), Duke University School of Law (Juris Doctor, 1969), and University of Virginia School of Law (LL.M., 1986).
Governor Jim Hunt appointed Becton to the N.C Court of Appeal in January 1981 to succeed Richard Erwin. He was subsequently elected to complete the remaining two years of an unfinished tenure in 1982, and was elected in 1984 for a full eight year term. He resigned in 1990 to go into private personal injury practice. Becton also teaches at the Law Faculty of the University of North Carolina and at Duke University Law School.
