The California Coastal Records Project , founded in 2002, documents the California coastline with aerial photographs taken from helicopters flying parallel to the shore. Their web page provides access to these images. One photo taken every 500 feet.
The entire California coast includes, except for parts of the Vandenberg Air Force Base (though some historical photos were included from the previous survey in 1989). Most beaches have been photographed several times, and the website has an interface to compare photos taken during different years. Kenneth and Gabrielle Adelman were recipients of Ansel Adams Award 2004 for Conservation Photography from Sierra Club for their work on the project.
The project was sued by Barbra Streisand, who claimed they violated his privacy by displaying photos of his house in Malibu. The project is opposed under the terms of California's legal SLAPP, and is applicable in court. Streisand v. Adelman et al., At the California Superior Court; Case SC077257
